At Kingsway Primary School, we believe that reading and writing are vital life skills.  Through our reading curriculum we strive to create a school of enthusiastic readers who enjoy developing their knowledge and skill base.  We have a curriculum which consists of high quality texts and stimuli and follows the aims of the National Curriculum for English 2014 to enable all children to:

  • read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage

At Kingsway, our reading journey starts with a Read Write Inc. programme where children develop their understanding and implementation of phonics.

On this page you will find our curriculum 'Intent, Implementation and Impact' statement for the subject outlining Kingsway's approach to the English Reading curriculum.  Children develop their fluency and comprehension through reading class texts and individual level books, through which children experience a rangeo high quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry in every year group.

All classes have reading areas and the school has a library, sourced with a range of texts that they are able to read for pleasure. Each class has timetabled access, where they are able to select books organised by genre, helping our children to become more aware of their personal preferences and to take ownership of their reading identities.
